2023: Once again court orders INEC to recognize candidates submitted by Labor coalition
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday affirmed its ruling obliging the Independent National Election Commission to put forward the names of candidates submitted to it by the National President of the Action Alliance, Dr. Adekunle Rfai Omwaj.
On November 4, 2023, Judge ZB Abubakar in a ruling ordered the National Election Commission to recognize the candidates submitted to it for the presidential, National Assembly, governors and state assemblies elections by Umwaj.
On Monday, the court ordered the Independent Electoral Commission to identify the candidates and to post their names at its headquarters and all state offices.
It also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload the names of the candidates on its website with immediate effect.
The lists include those who ran in the presidential and National Assembly elections last Saturday and those who ran in the gubernatorial and House of Representatives elections in all 36 states and the Federal District.
Responding to the ruling, the party’s national chairman, Dr Adekunle Rfai Omwaj, alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not respected court rulings in the past.
He said that the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmoud Yacoubou, is determined to cut off the nation’s democracy through his blatant disobedience to court orders, stressing that Yacoubou’s actions are capable of undermining confidence in the Electoral College.
He urged Nigerians of good will to persuade the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman to respect court orders and refrain from efforts to undermine democracy in the country.
