2023: Security chiefs read riots on political parties and their supporters in Kaduna

Ahead of the 2023 general elections in Kaduna State, security chiefs led by the Police Commissioner, Yekini Ayoko on Friday, read out the riots against political parties, their candidates and their supporters.

Addressing political parties and their supporters at a meeting, CP Ayoku said: “The 2022 Elections Act, particularly in Sections 92-97 has prohibited and criminalized a number of behaviors and actions.”

According to him, laws prohibit the involvement of non-governmental security agencies in campaigns, rallies and other activities in the electoral process, adding that carrying or using weapons such as Danish rifles, swords, daggers, bows and arrows and other dangerous weapons in campaign sites.

He warned political parties and their candidates against using thugs and other miscreants in the electoral process, while advising them to base their campaigns strictly on issues, keeping in mind that politics is essentially a clash of ideas.

He also warned against violence, incitement, hate speech, and the use of obscene and insulting language, and also warned against removing/distorting posters and banners of opponents.

“Political parties and candidates are still obligated to submit campaign schedules to my office well in advance for proper planning with a view to avoiding clashes in time and space,” he said.

He advised them to always abide by the rules to avoid any breakdown of law and order during political campaigns and during and after elections.

The meeting, which was held at the invitation of the Police Commissioner, Brig. Gen. C. Ogbabu, Garrison Commander, 1st Division, Kaduna Air Commodore AA Adedoyin 453 Base Service Group Nigerian Airforce Kaduna, CC Yakubu Salihu

The others were Deputy Controller of Immigration, Umaru Musa, Deputy Controller of Immigration, Kaduna State Command, Capital Kalu Ndukwe, Deputy Commander of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Kaduna State Command, CC Ado Sale, Monitor Correction Kaduna State Command, DCC Garba Lawal Ag. Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Kaduna Sector Command and DDIS Ibrahim Abdo Sarki, Department of Security Services, Kaduna.

Candidates for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Isa Muhammad Ashiru, Senator of the Congress for the Progressive Party Oba Sani, Senator of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) Suleiman Osman Honkoye and Labor Party (LP) member Hon. Jonathan Asaki was all present at the meeting.

The parties agreed to abide by the rules and regulations governing the election law.
