The High Court on Friday in Abuja annulled the primaries of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, which produced Hon Jones Onyerere as a Senate candidate for Imo West in February’s National Assembly elections.
The Apex Court annulled the primary election on the grounds that it was held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, rather than Orlo being the seat of the Senate in Imo West.
In ruling on the appeal by Hon Nnamdi Izani, Judge Emmanuel Agim said that the PDP flagrantly violated Article 87(9) of the Electoral Law by holding the primary elections outside the venue stipulated by the law.
The Apex Court held that, under the ruling, the HDP will not participate in the Senate elections next month, after it failed to present its candidate within the time permitted by law.
