2023: The US government reaffirms the visa ban to warn election fraudsters

The United States government has reaffirmed its position on Nigeria’s 2023 general election, threatening visa restrictions for politicians who incite violence or interfere with democratic processes.

The United States had earlier supported the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) decision to deploy a Bi-Mode Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and to transmit results electronically.

Speaking on behalf of the US government in Abuja on Monday, Political Counselor at the US Embassy in Nigeria, Rolf Olson, confirmed that the US government has no candidate in the 2023 elections.

Olson said: “It never ceases to amaze me how often we see comments, claims and assertions from people in social and traditional media about our supposed target in the election, which candidate or party we favor.

In fact, the United States does not support any single party or candidate in this election cycle (or for that matter, in any other upcoming election). Our interest is to support transparent and credible elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian voter, in a process that is conducted peacefully. Individuals who seek to undermine the democratic process may not be eligible for entry visas to the United States.”
