A boat accident at a jetty in Badagry community, Lagos State, left a 32-year-old man dead.
The accident occurred at the wharf on Thursday night when two boats collided, one coming from Badagry and the other coming from Lagos.
Mr. Victor Idwo, a resident of the community, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Badagry that the incident took place at 10:05 pm, at a wharf in Akarakomo.
The sound and voice of the sailors woke the community, who went out to see what had happened.
One of the passengers was crushed by the boat and fell into the water, and the residents and the boatman helped get him out of the water.
We pulled him out of the lake and discovered that he was wounded in the chest.
“While some suggested he be taken to private hospitals,” he said, “I told them the public hospital should be the best.”
Idoo claimed that when they arrived at the hospital there was no doctor to treat the victim.
He said the victim received first aid treatment and was in pain until 4:10 a.m. when they took him away for an X-ray.
“After returning from the X-ray, the ghost immediately became Muslim,” he said.
However, Dr Olatunde Bakare, medical director of Badagry General Hospital, told NAN that the man was taken to hospital in the middle of the night with a serious chest injury.
“His ribs were broken. We wanted to refer him to another hospital in Lagos because we could not handle his case.
“But we realized if we sent him to Lagos then, he might not get halfway there before he died.
So, we had to immobilize him; so, this morning, they took an x-ray of him.
“When he was out, he died because of the seriousness of the injury,” he said.
Bakari said the man was being taken care of appropriately by the hospital staff but his injury was fatal, resulting in his death.
