Former Argentina player Pablo Zabaleta asked coach Lionel Scaloni to start Angel Di Maria in the 2022 World Cup final against France on Sunday.
The Juventus player has not started any of Argentina’s last three matches in the tournament, but Zabaleta believes Di Maria, if he is fully fit, should start.
He pointed out that the former Paris Saint-Germain player would give the team an additional spark.
“If Di Maria is 100%, he has to start. Di Maria is an electric, unbalanced player. If he plays 60 minutes, it’s 60 minutes,” the former Manchester City star told ESPN.
Zabaleta believes Julian Alvarez should be on the bench despite the Manchester City star forming an excellent bond with Lionel Messi at the top of Argentina’s attack.
Messi scored a penalty while Alvarez scored twice to lead the Albiceleste team to a 3-0 victory over Croatia in the semi-finals.
‘He plays alongside Lionel Messi up front and, from the outside, he looks like: ‘Messi – don’t run. I’ll do it for you.’
“You need a big heart [to do that]. He started in the World Cup on the bench but then [got] One chance, and it was awesome.”
Argentina v France: It’s great – Zabaleta picks an ‘electric’ player to replace Julian Alvarez in the final.
