Argentina vs France: Messi breaks another record during the World Cup final

The captain of the Argentine national team, Lionel Messi, on Sunday evening broke another World Cup record after starting the Qatar 2022 final between his team and France.

Remember, Messi made his 1,000th competitive appearance in the knockout stages in Qatar.

The 35-year-old made his 26th World Cup appearance in the final against France at Lusail Stadium, breaking the record previously held by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus for most World Cup appearances by a male player.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker equaled and surpassed the Argentine record – which had belonged to the late Diego Maradona earlier in the competition.

The former Barcelona captain also overtook Rafa Marquez to become the player with the most World Cup appearances as captain.

His longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo has played four matches in the World Cup, four fewer than him.
