Attacks on our offices could endanger the 2023 elections – Chair of the Independent National Electoral Commission

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmoud Yacobo highlighted the impact of the attack on its offices ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Yakubu warned that the series of attacks on IEC facilities could jeopardize the 2023 general elections if they are not verified.

He issued the warning while addressing the House of Representatives Special Inquiry Committee into the attacks on the offices and facilities of the National Election Commission in Abuja yesterday.

The IEC chair stressed that while the commission was determined to continue preparations for the elections, the ongoing attacks on its facilities posed a serious threat.

However, Yakubu vowed that the Independent National Electoral Commission would continue its preparations for the 2023 general elections despite the attacks on its facilities.

According to Yakubu: “However, if these attacks continue at the pace they are occurring at present, the Commission may find it increasingly difficult to recover in time for the elections.

If it is about stopping the attacks, yes we can recover, but if the attacks continue, it will be very difficult for the committee to recover.

The attacks have far-reaching ramifications for the run-up to the general elections. First, facilities that have been destroyed, especially offices, will take time to rebuild.

Recently, thugs attacked INEC offices in states like Imo, Enugu, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo and Bayelsa states.
