Biafra: Let the launch of Nnamdi Kanu be a Christmas gift – HURIWA accuses Bukhari

The Nigerian Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA) on Sunday tasked President Muhammadu Buhari with releasing Biafra’s indigenous leader, Nnamdi Kano, as a 2022 Christmas gift to the southeastern geopolitical region.

In a statement, the National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onubiko challenged the President to be a man of his words by letting the judiciary decide Kano’s fate without any political intervention or vendetta.

The group asked Buhari to direct the union’s attorney general and justice minister, Abubakar Mallami, to comply with the appeals court’s ruling to release Kanu.

Horewa believes that Kanu’s release will restore peace and stability to southeastern Nigeria and restore economic growth to the region.

Horewa expressed her disappointment and dismay at the consistent positions of the rulers of southeastern Nigeria towards stepping up pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to free Kano from detention.

In May, Buhari, in a meeting with the Ebonyi State Stakeholders Forum held at the government seat in Abakaleke, said a political solution to Kano’s problems was impossible and insisted that only the court would decide his fate.

“I have carefully listened to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders, regarding a wide range of options and as I said earlier, this matter remains entirely within the jurisdiction of the Court as it will be properly adjudicated,” Buhari said.

However, in about 18 months since his unjustified arrest in the custody of the State Security Department in Abuja, the IPOB leader has yet to taste freedom despite the courts ruling granting him freedom and awarding billions of naira in damages against the Federal Government for his extraordinary extradition from Kenya in mid-2021. .

Currently, the main presidential candidates for the 2023 general election, including Peter Obi of the Labor Party, Paula Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the HDP, have expressed the belief that they will explore dialogue to end separatist unrest in the south-east and restore The economy of the Igbo people has been marred by unspeakable violence and the activities of unknown armed men.

Commenting on this, Onwubiko of HURIWA said: “As if it were a benchmark, all major presidential candidates for the 2023 presidential election have adopted a negotiated settlement to end agitation by IPOB and other separatist groups such as Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

“This is a clear signal to President Muhammadu Buhari that he made a mistake seven years ago because he opted for military methodology and the extraordinary extradition of Nnamdi Kano and finally refused to comply with the decision of the Court of Appeal to release Nnamdi Kano. The President should respect his words and order Malamy to heed the ruling of the Court of Appeal to release Kanu. Anything Otherwise, it shows that Buhari and his regime do not respect the rule of law, which is not surprising based on his predecessor as a military general.

“This is the most auspicious time for Buhari to make amends and immediately release Nnamdi Kano as a Christmas gift and one of his government’s major parting gifts to Nigerians and generations unborn because of the potential that Nnamdi’s release could restore peace and stability to south-eastern Nigeria and restore growth region’s economy.”
