Criminal confiscation: We do not investigate Tinubu – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed allegations that it has launched investigations into allegations of criminal forfeiture against the Progressive Congress candidate, Paula Tinubu.

Tinubu came under serious attack recently following the release of documents indicating that the US government seized some of his money in 1989 as drug trafficking proceeds.

Since Friday, a press release purportedly issued by the National Independent Electoral Commission has appeared online, claiming that the commission has launched an investigation into the criminal forfeiture case against Tinubu.

The letter said the commission is in contact with a court in the United States to determine a possible violation of the Nigerian Elections Act 2022.

But the Independent National Electoral Commission categorically stated on Saturday that the aforementioned press release did not emanate from it, nor is it pursuing any investigation against the GPC candidate.

“It is the handiwork of mischief makers and completely fake,” said IEC spokesperson Festus Okoye in a statement.

Okoye stated that statements by the commission are always uploaded to the INEC Press Corps platform “and are disseminated at the same time through our website and official social media.”

He advised the public to ignore the press release.
