Elections: Arresting and Prosecuting Fake News Vendors – Imo PDP for Security Agencies

Less than two days before the general election, the Imo State People’s Democratic Party has called on the security services to tame the fake news by rising to the occasion to arrest and prosecute those whose trading stock is a destructive enterprise.

The PDP made the call in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Collins Opurozor, which was made available to DAILY POST in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

While the opposition party warned its supporters against misinformation, it confirmed that Dr. Albert Agulana remains the party’s candidate for the federal constituency of Aboh Mbaisi/Ngor Okpala.

Reports of his sacking were dismissed by the Independent Electoral Commission, describing the false news as the height of his enemies’ desperation.

The statement read: “It becomes deeply concerning that certain elements are going into the city with fake news as part of their attempts to deny the residents of the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency the good representation that Dr Agulanna provides.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there was no time when Dr Agulanna’s name was omitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission. In short, the final list of eligible candidates as published by INEC contains Dr Agulanna’s name as the House of Representatives candidate for the federal constituency of Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala.

“Then, our party calls on the security services to tame the fake news by rising to the occasion to arrest and prosecute those whose trading stock is a destructive enterprise.”
