Everton legend Alan Stubbs has expressed his disappointment after Alex Iwobi sustained an injury in Friday night’s Emirates Cup match against Manchester United.
The Nigeria international was badly tackled by Dutch defender Tyrell Malacia in the second half of the match at Old Trafford.
Iwobi was sent off the field and was replaced by Frenchman Abdallah Dacor.
The 26-year-old has appeared regularly for the Toffees this season and there are concerns he could be poised for an extended period on the sidelines.
The midfielder is expected to undergo a scan on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury.
Stubbs stated that Everton, who are fighting relegation, could not afford to lose Iwobi to injury for so long.
“Alex Iwobi just went through his ankle and inserted the ankle. I hope he didn’t have his ankle ligaments done because they look like that,” Stubbs told the BBC.
“I hope what we are seeing now is just my precaution but Iwobi looks upset. Players know when something is going wrong.”
