Group raises concern about potential 10 million deaths due to antibiotic use

The leadership of the Advisory Group on Patients with Antimicrobial Resistance has sounded the alarm that in the next few years at least 10 million deaths will be recorded annually as a result of AMR.

At the time of this report, 1.27 million people, according to the group, die annually as a result of antimicrobial resistance.

Group member Dr Danjuma Adda made the announcement on Tuesday at a key stakeholder meeting and discussion competition held in the Multipurpose Hall of the International School of Excellence, Jalingo, Taraba State.

Ada who served as the founder and CEO of the Center for Initiative and Development (CFID), expressed his sadness at the way and manner in which antibiotic drugs are being misused around the world.

“The use and abuse of antimicrobials in both human and veterinary medicine in the past five years” he notes, “has led to the emergence of strains of bacteria that no longer respond to antibiotic resistance.”

He was concerned that “if antibiotics and antifungals lose their effectiveness, we lose the ability to treat infections and control other diseases.”

He stressed the need to “preserve and protect the few antibiotics we have.”

He worried that pharmaceutical companies were no longer interested in producing antibiotic drugs.

Noting that “antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to the world,” Ada, current chair of the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA), said, “We all need to do something to protect medicines. It’s a collective responsibility.”

He said, “Medicines are rapidly losing their ability to prevent infection, hence the need for the authority’s interest in formulating ways to preserve and protect them.”

Taraba State Health Commissioner Dr Innocent Vakkai has also identified “irrational use of drugs” as the main cause of antibiotic resistance.

He declared that the state government had taken measures to thwart the activities of imposters in the health sector.
