Catholic Pope Francis has revealed that he signed a letter of resignation nearly a decade ago in case poor health prevented him from carrying out his duties.
The Catholic Pontiff turned 86 on December 17, and celebrated his 53 years as a priest on December 13.
Speaking to the Spanish newspaper ABC, the pope said he delivered the letter to the Vatican’s foreign minister, Tarcisio Bertone, in 2013.
Pope Francis who has said in the past that he would step down from the papacy if health problems prevented him from his duties.
He revealed: “I did sign my waiver. I signed it and said, ‘If I become disabled for medical reasons or anything else, that’s my resignation.'”
On whether he wanted to reveal this to the world, he said: “That’s why I’m telling you. I think that at my age and with this restriction I should save myself a bit to be able to serve the Church. Or, alternatively, consider the possibility of stepping aside.”
