President Muhammadu Buhari, has been commended by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide for his nomination of an experienced administrator from Bayelsa State, President Samuel Ogboko, as Chief Director General, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
IYC President Timothy Peter Igbeva said on Wednesday that the announcement of the long-awaited board members on the floor of the Senate has brought relief to the board and all stakeholders in the Niger Delta.
He said that the proposed council, when inaugurated, would re-establish democratic management of the commission as enshrined in the National Defense Establishment Committee Act and thus end the era of tyrannical impunity for the interventionist agency.
Igbefa recalled how his council and other well-meaning stakeholders continued their protests against notions of a single administrative model, which was foreign to the NDC law but was used to manage the affairs of the committee.
“We have been relentless in mobilizing our people in the Niger Delta to resist a single administration imposed on the NDDC that denied the principles of fairness, equity and fairness enshrined in the law, which stipulate that a board of directors comprising representatives from all member states at all time should manage the affairs of the commission .
“We are glad that our efforts as a council have paid off and we commend President Muhammadu Buhari for doing the right thing. Better late than never.
He said the nomination of Chief Samuel Ogboko, who is from Ogbeya Local Government Area, as the chief managing director was in line with the NDDC which insisted that “it is the right of Bayelsa to produce the managing director”.
However, Igbefa urged the Senate not to delay the screening of board candidates to avoid unnecessary policies capable of obstructing President Buhari’s directives and derailing the collective hope of the Niger Delta.
Describing Ogboko as an experienced administrator, he understood the problems and challenges of the Niger Delta with the ability to confront them, and insisted that his appointment was deserved.
He said, “We have no doubt that Commander Samuel Ogboko’s candidacy is worthy. He is well-read, has sufficient understanding of the problems of the Niger Delta and has the capacity to address them.
“We commend our council members who protested so faithfully across the region as our prayers were answered. We also thank the rulers of the South and South for their resolute stance during the application for this council along with all citizens of good will.”
