Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, responded Thursday evening to the death of the Brazilian legend, Pele.
The Daily Post reports that Pele’s family announced his death in a post via the football icon’s official Instagram account on Thursday.
Pele has been receiving regular treatment from doctors since he underwent surgery to remove a polyp from his colon in September 2021.
The 82-year-old was readmitted to hospital at the end of 2022.
In response, Messi published in a post on his Instagram account a picture of himself with Pele in a suit and wrote: “Rest in peace, pele.”
For his part, former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo wrote, “My deepest condolences go out to the whole of Brazil, and in particular to the family of Edson Arantes do Nascimento. A mere ‘goodbye’ to eternal king Pele will never be enough to express the anguish the entire football world is currently embracing.
“An inspiration to many millions, a reference yesterday, today and forever. The love you have always shown me was reciprocated in every moment we shared even from a distance. He will never be forgotten and his memory will live forever in all of us football fans. RIP King Pele.”
Pele is considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time.
