N544m scandal: EFCC appeals acquittal of former SGF Babachir Lawal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will appeal the decision to dismiss its case against Babisher Lawal.

The former secretary to the Union Government gave the floor to the anti-graft agency before the court on Friday.

Justice Charles Agpaza of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court dismissed the corruption charges against Lawal.

The former SGF, his brother Hamidu David Lawal, Suleiman Abubakar and father John the two, along with Rholavision Engineering and Josmon Technologies, face trial.

The amended 10 counts brought against them include fraud, money transfer and criminal conspiracy to the tune of more than N544 million.

Judge Aghbaza ruled that the committee, which presented 11 witnesses, did not specify the components of the alleged crime.

The judge said the EFCC did not prove that Lawal was a member of the Presidential Initiative for the Northeast (PINE), a contract issuer, or a member of the Ministerial Tenders Board.

In a statement, department spokesman Wilson O’Garen announced that the agency would review the ruling and “challenge its validity in the Court of Appeals.”
