Naira Policy: FG, CBN must respect Supreme Court’s decision, fans suffering – Oluwo
Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdirashid Adewal Akanbe has described the silence of the presidency and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the face of the Supreme Court ruling on the re-circulation of old Naira notes as a serious affront.
Oba Akanbe, who directed his appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to influence CBN to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling, also added that silence could turn the judiciary into a heavy arm of the government.
The traditional ruler announced this through a statement made on Monday by Ali Ibrahim, his chief press secretary.
Olowo lamented that Nigerians had suffered so much in the face of naira scarcity, and urged the government to be sensitive to the plight of the people.
He expressed his fears that the continued silence of the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria would not only increase the famine suffered by Nigerians, but would also weaken the country’s economy.
The statement noted, “There is a need by the federal government to respect the sanctity of the judiciary by respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling on the re-circulation of the New Naira note.
Nigerians are suffering. I appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider the new naira system to restore hope in the judiciary.
“It is pathetic to see us in a naira mess where you have your money in your account but no access to cash to buy a regular bottle of water. It is worse on the part of the masses, artisans and petty merchants without an account. Nigerians can no longer afford such hardship. The Supreme Court has spoken Please, the federal government and CBN must listen.”
Faced with the continuing difficulties experienced by Nigerians with regard to the Naira Re-designation policy, the Supreme Court ruled after two adjournments on March 3, 2023 that the old N200, N500 and N1000 with the new notes should be spent till December 2023.
