NCC is committed to gender equality in IT – Danbatta

Executive Vice President (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Danpatta, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring there is a balance of female representation in the information technology (IT) ecosystem.

Recently speaking through the Commission’s Chief Digital Media Department, Nafisa Usman Roja, at the Nigerian Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT) ICT Test Competition for Secondary School Girls, EVC said there was an urgent need to equip the girl child with adequate knowledge, access and use of IT programs and services that will give them the skills to compete in the digital space.

Danpata also mentioned that the Empowerment Program to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, is in line with the Commission’s mandate of campaigning for broadband penetration for women in rural and suburban areas to build capacity, employment, increase connectivity and inclusion for gender equality across the country. .

The center also highlighted the committee’s policies, projects and initiatives that show the importance of bridging gender disparities and ensuring that the Internet is a safe place for children. She focused on the Committee’s Child Online Protection (COP) project, which aims to educate children and their parents/carers on measures needed to protect themselves and their wards as they navigate cyberspace.

The CEO of NCC also informed the audience of the committee’s commitment to rehabilitate the girl child and women by collaborating with stakeholders in the ICT sector to create programs to encourage, empower and expose them to the vast opportunities that exist in the digital world.

The two-day event focused on creating awareness programs for IT-related services and products among women in rural and suburban areas of Nigeria, targeting special groups and students in secondary schools and higher education institutions. The event ended with the presentation of gifts to the winners of the contest competition held in the forum.
