New Year: Sanwo-Olu agrees to release 104 prisoners from Lagos prisons
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has agreed to release 104 prisoners from various correctional facilities to celebrate the New Year.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Moyosur Onigbanjo (SAN) issued a statement on Friday.
He said Sanu-Olu signed the release order on December 28 on the recommendation of the Mercy Franchise Advisory Board.
Onigbanjo noted that the prisoner release is in line with the governor’s commitment to decongest Lagos prisons as part of justice sector reforms.
The Commissioner said the Franchise Advisory Board had exercised due diligence in its deliberations on applications in line with applicable guidelines.
The authority considered the information provided by the correctional authorities, the nature of the crime, the period of imprisonment, the age, health and behavioral behavior of the inmates.
This process is supported by the provisions of Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
