Nigeria and the Czech Republic are committing N9bn to fund research and technology developments

Chairman of the Presidential Implementation Committee for Nigeria-Czech Republic Technology Transfer (PIC), Dr Mohamed Dahir said the two governments have committed a direct intervention fund of 9 billion naira to boost technology research and development (R&Ds).

Dr Dahiru on Wednesday revealed that 25 companies that have scaled up the Evaluation Committee Standards assessment process will receive funding from the Czech Republic-Nigeria joint R&D project to start in 2023.

The Government of the Czech Republic is supporting tech-based companies in Nigeria with $10 million (equivalent to N4.5 billion Naira) and an additional matching fund of the same amount already approved by the Federal Government through the National Agency for Science, Engineering and Infrastructure (NASENI).

In his opening remarks, Co-Chair of the Presidential Implementation Committee as well as Executive Vice President/CEO of the National Agency for Science, Engineering and Infrastructure (NASENI), Eng. The evaluation of the proposal, said Prof. Mohamed Haruna, was diligently carried out by the members of the Evaluation Committee under the auspices of PIC, who were drawn from the Nigeria Academy of Sciences, Nigeria Academy of Engineering (as research experts) and the Nigeria-Czech Republic Trade and Investment Council.

He says: “The process was well defined, transparent and well coordinated by experts in both research and business fields and assisted ably by the PIC Secretariat.

“To my knowledge, this is the first time in the history of Nigeria that the private sector, academia and the public sector have come together to submit joint research and development proposals with business plans for commercialization and mass production from inception supported by business plans.

He said, “This collaboration between Nigeria and the Czech Republic and the collaboration between NASENI and TA CR teaches us ways to disseminate applied research and the best option for establishing the marriage between the private sector, academia and government known as the Triple Helix,” he said. .
