Nigeria Decides: Independent Electoral Commission Reports Violence in Lagos, Gives Reason to Cancel Elections in Edo

The Independent National Electoral Commission, speaking of the violence that broke out in some areas in Lagos during the presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.

Addressing the press at the International Convention Center in Abuja on Saturday, Commission Chairman Professor Mahmud Yakubu said that elections have been canceled in some federal constituencies in Edo State.

He said that the reason for the cancellation of the elections in North Isan and South Isan was that there was no political party logo on the ballot paper.

“We are aware of the violence and destruction of election materials in Mafuluko, Ajiji, Oshodi and Ilekoshi. We have been able to normalize the situation in a number of places where elections are currently taking place.

“So we’re watching the operations in the other areas that you mentioned,” he said.

He continued, “In Edo State, we dealt with a situation yesterday where there is a political party whose abbreviation is on the ballot paper and logo is not on the ballot paper in a federal constituency and after meeting with the stakeholders, a decision was taken since the articles were in order to invalidate the elections. So we suspended the elections. In Isan North, Isan South and Egybin.
