On Monday, Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbagabyamila said that population growth in Nigeria should be taken seriously.
The Speaker warned that failure to take advantage of and maximize the benefits of changing demographics is dangerous.
He spoke in Abuja at the “Parliamentary Summit on Tracking Nigeria’s Rapid Demographic Transformation” organized by the National Population Commission (NPC) and the World Bank.
Gbagabyamela tasked the government at all levels to identify and deliberately take measures that would maximize Nigeria’s huge workforce.
The Lagos legislator said his country cannot be complacent with the demographic shift as this could prove fatal in the future.
Referring to the passage of 16 years since the Population and Housing Census, he said that the current data is based on projections and estimates.
“What we do know for sure is that Nigeria has a huge and growing youth bulge in our population.
“Whether this fact turns out to be a good thing or a tragedy depends on the policy choices we make and the actions we take now.”
Gbagapyamila called for immediate and sustained action to drive demographic change that would make economic growth more achievable.
