The Ekiti State High Court, sitting in Ado-Ekiti, has sentenced one Segun Iwaitan to death by hanging for being a sectarian and raping a 20-year-old virgin.
The court sentenced the 24-year-old to death by hanging for being a sectarian and to life imprisonment for raping his neighbour, a student at Federal Polytechnic Addo Ekiti, at gunpoint.
Iwaitan was tried on one of seven counts of rape, illegal possession of a firearm, and membership in a secret cult, among other offenses.
According to the charge, “Segun Iwaetan and Atila Iwaetan (now at liberty) conspired on January 16, 2021 at Federal Polytechnic Road, to commit burglary and robbery, break into Olayemi Oyerinde store, and receive stolen property such as 15 polo shirts, 50 jean pants, 30 pairs of leather slippers from Among other things, with a value of more than 1.8 million n.
On the 5th of February 2021, Iwaitan raped a 20-year-old female student in Odo-Addo Street, Addo-Ekiti, while illegally possessing two guns. He was found, on February 10, 2021, to be a member of the Eiye Brotherhood’s secret sect.”
In her testimony, the rape victim said: “On that day, the defendant gained access to my room around 3 am, pointed a gun at me and told me not to scream or else he would shoot me. He ordered me to undress and had sex with me by force. At the time he raped me, I was not He removed a virgin. After that, he begged me for forgiveness and asked me not to tell anyone about it.”
The public prosecutor, Albert Adeyemi, called five witnesses and presented as documents the accused’s statement, the search warrant, two homemade rifles and a medical report.
Judge Adeniyi Familoni delivered the verdict and sentenced the accused to four of the counts.
The judge said, “The accused was convicted as follows: conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms, and he is sentenced to 12 years in prison without any fine option, and the sentences apply concurrently from the date of his arrest and detention of the accused.
“In the rape case, the court sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment,” while because of belonging to the “Eye” group, the judge said to the defendant: “The verdict of this court is that you are to be hanged by your neck until you die, may God have mercy on your soul.”
