Human rights lawyer Belomi Olajengbesi on Saturday praised the governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, for rescinding hasty appointments and other actions illegally taken by his predecessor, Gboyega Oyetola.
Olajengbesi said Oyetola showed hostility, political bitterness and intolerance by not cooperating with Senator Adeleke through a proper handover process.
Remember, Adeleke of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, defeated Oitola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Conservative elections on July 16, 2022.
Adeleke won 17 of the 30 local council areas in the state.
But by the end of his term in November, Oyetola had also appointed 30 public servants as permanent secretaries, among other non-essential appointments.
Oitola also held the local government elections on 15 October through the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, which was later annulled by the Federal High Court held in Osogbo as it contravened Articles 29 and 32 of the 2022 Elections Act.
However, Olajengbesi said that public office holders must learn to act constitutionally regardless of whether or not they lose the election.
Oyetola was also charged with abuse of power as his actions violated the law.
A statement from Olajengbesi said: “Governor Ademola Adeleke deserves to be congratulated once again for dismissing the incumbent. It is not an easy task, but one that only a tenacious, courageous and democratic fighter can face.”
“Having said that, the good people of Osun State are very proud of Senator Adeleke’s actions in the few days he has been sworn in since November 27, 2022. From freezing all government accounts to changing the name of the state from Osun State to Osun State, and stopping hastily appointed monarchs after His defeat, the dismissal of the Chairman of the Osun Electoral Commission, the order directing all former appointees under Oitola to return government property, among others.. All these steps are commendable and show that it is Governor Adeleke who cherishes accountability and justice.
“A view must be made that Oytoola acted blatantly in contravention of the constitution through his spurious and selfish appointments near nightfall of his ill-fated administration.
In fact, the aggression at the start of the Adeleke government appears to be simply because Oyetola and his administration did not cooperate with the 37 members of the transition committee that Senator Adeleke set up after the DPP candidate won. No report was delivered to the incumbent state governor by the Oyetola government. Oyetola demonstrated animosity, political bitterness, and intolerance by not cooperating with Senator Adeleke through a proper handover process.
“One should encourage Senator Adeleke to continue his firm grip on the brutal laws and policies of the Owetola government. Democracy should be about giving dividends to the people and not a few people to enrich themselves through the bogus appointments of their close friends. The people of Osun have seen the light and this light will not fail them In terms of providing infrastructure, quality education, affordable housing, drinking water, stable electricity, security, and timely payment of workers’ salaries, among other things.”
