Osun Police warns of sectarianism and arrests four suspects

Osun State Police Command has revealed that it has arrested four suspects in connection with the chaos in Elisa and its environs.

While revealing that efforts are in full swing to catch other perpetrators, the leadership also appealed to parents and guardians to keep an eye on their children and departments to prevent them from getting involved in any kind of criminal activities.

In a press release signed by Yemisi Opalola, Police Public Relations Officer to Command on Wednesday, he stated that the Police Commissioner has ordered a comprehensive statewide campaign against sectarians and other criminal activities in the state.

Obalola who stated that the police commissioner condemned the violent clash between the two communities on Tuesday confirmed that law and order had been restored.

He also promised to ensure a proper investigation into the incident.

According to the statement, “The Osun State Police Commissioner has ordered an all-out crackdown on sectarianism and other related criminal activities in all nooks and crannies of the state.

The Communist Party condemned the violent clash between two communities yesterday, February 21, 2023.

“Currently, four (4) suspects have been arrested in connection with the chaos in Elisa and her environment, while efforts are underway to apprehend the other perpetrators.

“Law and order have been restored and he promised to ensure a proper investigation into the incident,” he said.

It was gathered that on Tuesday some people who were members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) were violently attacked by suspected political thugs in Elisa.

The attacks, according to Akindale Adekunle, the Interim President of the People’s Democratic Party in Osun, led to the deaths of Raviu Quadri-Abiodun and Elia Baba-Ewe.

Adekunle also revealed that the third victim, Gbenga Femi from Olorunsogo, is still in a comatose state.

The party that condemned this act called on the security services to prosecute the perpetrators.

“We expressly condemn these unjustified killings and call on the Nigerian Police and other sister security agencies to hunt down all the APC leaders in the state who are responsible for the unnecessary bloodshed,” Adekunle said.

Meanwhile, the new Commissioner of Police, CP Peter O. Abayomi has been assigned to the Osun State Command for elective duty.

Opalola stated that CP Abayomi assumed office with immediate effect on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

It said the publication was in line with the determination of the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, to enable a smooth, free, fair, credible and violence-free 2023 general election.

According to Obalola, Abbayomi appealed to politicians in the state to warn their supporters to avoid all kinds of violence and to avoid heating up the political system.
