The Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, was engaging in diversionary tactics after concluding that its defeat was imminent in the February poll.
In a statement, Frank Chibo, special media assistant to the APC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenged the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to reveal his real name and early education.
However, Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, described the latest allegation as another attempt at shadowboxing.
He said if only the PDP had gone back to its records, it would have realized that the same reckless campaign of slander was its stock trade in the gubernatorial campaigns in Lagos state in 2003.
It was also the subject of investigations by the Lagos State Assembly, Onanuga noted, adding that in the 2003 elections, the masses in Lagos punished the PDP for its malicious campaign and vigorously rejected the party at the polls.
He stressed that it is unfortunate that the party and its presidential candidate chose to revive dead allegations, knowing that this election is fading away again.
Onanuga stated: “In yet another boyish move, Shoaibu challenged our candidate to give his full name and embarked on an imaginary journey about his early education and lineage, matters that had already been thrown into the bin decades ago.
“We are not surprised that the desperate Atiku camp, which is facing mounting setbacks in its campaign, would engage in another round of smear after failing to generate any capital over its inflated allegations of drug trafficking against our candidate.”
Onanuga noted that with the huge turnout of Nigerian people to welcome Tinubu in Kaduna, Minna, Abuja and other parts of Nigeria in the past week, it was evident that they were running after a train that left the station.
According to him, the constitution of the republic is very clear about the rights of a citizen to run for the office of president. “Our candidate met these conditions. The Independent National Electoral Commission, the impartial arbiter, confirmed that he is eligible to run.
