The Brazilian legend, Pele, who died on Thursday, congratulated Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, on winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on December 18.

The Daily Post reports that Pele’s family announced his death on Thursday evening in a post via the football icon’s official account on Instagram.

The soccer icon is considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

The 82-year-old has been receiving regular treatment from doctors since he underwent surgery to remove a polyp from his colon in September 2021.

Pele was readmitted to the hospital at the end of 2022.

However, on December 18, 2022, Pele posted on his Instagram page a picture of the Argentine national team celebrating the FIFA World Cup at Lusail Stadium in Qatar after defeating France in the final match.

As the former Brazilian Sports Minister wrote: “Today, football continues to tell its story, as always, in a captivating way. Messi won his first World Cup, as his path deserved it. My dear friend Mbappe scored four goals in the final. What a gift Watching this spectacle was for the future of our sport. And I can only congratulate Morocco on such a great campaign. It’s great to see Africa shine. Congratulations Argentina! Definitely Diego is smiling now.”
