Peter Obi reacts to Dowayne Okobi’s conviction

Labor presidential candidate Peter Obi has announced that the conviction of the Director General of his campaign organisation, Dr Dwayne Okobi, for money laundering will not break his determination to take over the presidency of Nigeria in 2023.

Obi said this during an interaction with journalists at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), in Oyo, Akwa Ibom State Assembly Secretariat on Monday.

The former Anambra state governor said he was not deterred by the conviction and would allow due process to take its course.

Obi said, “I heard about it [Okupe’s conviction] just like you. I’m still studying what comes out of the court and everything. I believe in the rule of law. You will not demoralize me.

“In my life, I’ve never stayed where they got me, or else, I would be where they got me before. This election, if they want to, let them do anything about the people around me. I’ll get there.”

The Daily Post reports that Okupe is guilty of 26 of the 59 charges favored against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Judge Ijeoma Ojukwu had ordered the 26 counts, which each carry a two-year prison sentence, to be carried out concurrently.
