Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom extended a surprise invitation to President Muhammadu Buhari to commission two newly constructed blocks of cells at the Makurdi Intermediate Correctional Center in the state.
This was revealed by Governor Ortom at a meeting with the residents of Ogundo, the host community for the Correctional Service.
It is reported that Governor Ortom has in the past criticized President Buhari’s APC-led administration, especially in the wake of repeated attacks by Fulani herdsmen in parts of Benue State, which resulted in deaths and property damage.
Moreover, the call comes amidst Ortom’s ongoing battle in alliance with the Integrity Group against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over the retention of Eurechia Ayo as the party’s national president.
The group wants Ayu to resign as a precondition for supporting Atiku in the next presidential election in 2023.
Construction of new correctional centers has begun following reports of jailbreaks across the country, including one in the FCT’s Kogi District Council, among many others.
The governor warned the community not to encroach on lands that were ceded to the service and any other federal agency that contributes to the growth and security of the Benue people.
