Police warn against showing dogs in polling stations

The Nigeria Police Force has warned against the display of pets, especially dogs, in polling units on Election Day.

The force’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi gave the warning in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that going to polling stations with dogs on election day is against the provisions of the election law.

According to him, the police will not condone such behavior as it may amount to harassment and intimidation of voters.

Section 126 (1) of the 2022 Elections Law clearly states those actions by voters that constitute electoral violations and are punishable by law.

Paragraph (f) mentions the possession of weapons with the intent of intimidating voters and election officials.

He added: “Dogs can be classified as offensive weapons as their owners or handlers can use them to intimidate and harass others and cause aggression and physical harm to others.”

Adejobi therefore warned those who intended to display their dogs for any purpose in polling units to desist.
