Polls 2023: Ebony Under Siege – CSO
A coalition of civil society organizations, the Civil Society Anti-Fraud and Electoral Security Committee, CISCAES, has expressed its dismay at the high rate of insecurity in Ebonyi State.
The group made the remark during a press conference in Enugu state.
She alleged that the situation in Ebonyi was caused by the state governor, Eng. David Imhi, whom they accused of using the Ipopago security apparatus to intimidate and harass citizens and political opponents.
The Daily Post reported that Ebubeagu was recently declared illegal by the Federal High Court sitting in Ebonyi.
In the press conference marked, “Critical Briefing and National Press Conference on the alarming state of insecurity in Ebonyi State and its grave consequences before, during and after the 2023 General Elections,” the National Coordinator of CISCAES, Comrade Kennedy Irie described Omahi as a dictator and emperor who does not tolerate opposition.
Omahi, it was claimed, was intent on imposing a candidate of his choice on the Ebionites using forbidden Ebubeagu security equipment at the next election.
He said that despite the fact that the Ibubago group was dissolved by a supreme court, Amahi soon recruited the same group made up of people from different states, including northerners, to terrorize and harass the opposition.
Iyere, who also accused the governor of building a terrorist group in Ebonyi State, said that Ebonyi State is now very volatile.
Describing the state as the most insecure in the entire Southeast region, Iyere said that even the church is highly politicized and leaders are afraid to make statements out of fear of the governor’s actions.
He said, “The ruler has made himself emperor and supreme leader. He wants to impose a candidate on the people by all means,” said Irie.
He recounted how he narrowly escaped death from a hotel in Ebonyi State, which prompted him to move to Enugu for the press conference.
He called on the federal government to focus its spotlight on the activities of Ebubeagu in Ebonyi State with a view to ensuring peaceful and barrier-free elections.
Nevertheless, Eyre urged the people of the Southeast to come out and exercise their privilege for candidates of their choosing.
