Premier League: Harry Maguire asked to leave Manchester United after the 1-0 win over Wolverhampton

Rio Ferdinand has asked Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United immediately when the January transfer window opens.

Paul Scholes has also pointed out that left-back Luke Shaw is even ahead of Maguire in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order.

England international Maguire missed United’s first two matches after the World Cup as Ten Hag announced he was ill.

Ten Hag has been branded by players such as former defender Paul Parker as a liar for saying the player was unwell before their game against Nottingham Forest and Maguire was again named among the substitutes today.

With Lisandro Martínez also still out, regular left-back Shaw moved inside inside to partner Raphael Varane in the United defence, and Ferdinand argued that Maguire should be fit enough to play if he was in the squad.

“It’s not for the long term,” Ferdinand told BT Sport of Shaw starting centre-half.

“I raised my eyebrows when I saw Lindelof and Maguire on the bench. If they weren’t fit, they wouldn’t be on the bench.

“If I were Harry Maguire, I’m looking for a new club now, I have to be honest.

At Manchester United, it didn’t work out for him.

“So I’m thinking if I were him in his place, I’d say, find another place where I can go and enjoy my football and play regularly.”

Scholes added that Maguire was now Tin Hag’s last choice in defence.

“He’s the last half selection position now with even Shaw ahead of him.”
