Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said he would be surprised if Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was not looking for a new club.
He said this after the England international heeded his previous advice to leave Old Trafford, vowing to continue fighting for his place at Manchester United rather than seek better playing time elsewhere.
Maguire fell down the points standings in Manchester United’s central defensive line, with Eric ten Hag seeing Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as the best options.
Although the England World Cup star has returned to the line-up and captained United in recent 3-0 wins over Bournemouth and Charlton, he is still ahead with the manager opting to use left-back Luke Shaw in central defence.
Martinez and Varane are in fitness and will resume their partnership in the derby against Manchester City on Saturday.
With this, Ferdinand is sure that the former Leicester City star will calmly look for a new club right away.
He told iNews: “If it were me [were Maguire]… And as I sit here, I have to ask questions and say ‘It’s not happening, you obviously don’t fancy me, I need to look for a new club, thank you’.
“If Harry Maguire and his agent weren’t looking for a new club, I would be absolutely blown away. I don’t see Harry Maguire at this point in his career saying ‘I’m happy to be a team player’.”
“I can’t see Maguire…he says he’s happy to be on the bench. I wouldn’t be able to understand that.”
