Arsenal legend Paul Merson slammed Liverpool defender Joel Matip for criticism during the Reds’ 3-0 Premier League defeat against Brighton on Saturday.
Merson blamed Matip for the first goal that Liverpool conceded against Brighton, and insisted that the player made a huge mistake at Falmer Stadium.
Two goals from Solly March and one from Danny Welbeck ensured Brighton beat Liverpool at home.
The first goal Liverpool conceded was due to a poor touch from Matip, which allowed Brighton’s Alexis McAllister to set up an easy goal in March.
In response to Matip’s error, Merson told Sky Sports (via TBR Football):
“It’s a huge mistake by Matip. And that goal in the side! What a start for Brighton – they deserve it.”
