Premier League: Sacrificing himself – Joe Cole sends message to Chelsea over midfielder’s contract extension

Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has urged his former club to extend midfielder Mason Mount’s contract amid speculation linking the player with a move away from the Blues.

Coles believes Mount sacrifices himself for the team, adding that he is a leader.

However, Mount is not enjoying his best season at Chelsea and was left out for the last Premier League game against West Ham and the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.

The England international is in the final 18 months of his current contract with Chelsea, but talks over a new deal have stalled and have been postponed until the summer.

“Maybe Mason Mount was sitting there thinking, ‘I’ve performed for this club for three or four years now, I’ve won the Champions League, I’ve been pushed forward every season,'” Cole told 90Minute.com.

“He’s a leader, he sacrifices himself for the team. He wants to stay at Chelsea, I’m sure he does.

“I don’t understand all my life, nor do I know the dealings – perhaps they are so far apart as to where they value each other. He may think: ‘Where am I sitting?'”

“He’s out of the team now, and it’s a dangerous situation for Mason and Chelsea to be in. Football is so fickle, we can forget what a good player Mason Mount is.

“Renewal of the contract will be at the top of my list with Chelsea. There must be a compromise to solve it.”
