Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen slammed France striker Ousmane Dembele over the “stupid” challenge that led to Argentina’s early penalty kick during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final for both teams on Sunday.
Owen, the former England national team player, revealed this in a tweet via his Twitter account.
He tweeted, “Putting aside his stupid challenge in the penalty kick, Dembele misses it almost every time he touches it. Argentina play very well here.”
France started in slow fashion against Argentina in the World Cup final, with Lionel Messi dictating the tempo and Julian Alvarez pressing relentlessly from the front.
During the confrontation, Di Maria made his way into the penalty area in the 23rd minute, after he easily beat Dembele.
Dembele panicked and although he only made contact with Di Maria, his contact was enough to send the Juventus star sprawling and convince referee Shimon Marciniak to point to the spot.
Then Messi converted the penalty kick, and Argentina ended up winning the final match of the World Cup.
It ended with a 4-2 win on penalties after a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes.
