Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro has suggested that Benfica’s Gonzalo Ramos start for Portugal before captaining Cristiano Ronaldo when they face Morocco in their World Cup quarter-final match on Saturday in Qatar.
Peseiro also admitted that Portugal coach Fernando Santos faces a dilemma in choosing between Ronaldo and Ramos before his team’s confrontation with Morocco in the 2022 World Cup.
Recall that Santos decided to bench Ronaldo for his last match against Switzerland and it proved to be a masterstroke, as his replacement Ramos scored his first hat-trick at the international level.
Ronaldo, who started all of Portugal’s group stage matches, looked in the shadow of himself, scoring just once from the penalty spot against Ghana’s Black Stars.
“It is not easy to put Cristiano back on the bench, nor is it easy to put Goncalo on the bench now,” Peseiro told Portuguese sports daily A Bola.
He added, “It is necessary to be able to have a more mobile person, as is undoubtedly Goncalo Ramos compared to (current) Ronaldo.”
