Senator Akpan’s Imprisonment: God Acclaimed Me – Obono Obla

A former personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Chief Prosecutor Okoye Obono-Opla has responded to the sentencing of Obong Basi Albert, YPP gubernatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom State by the Federal High Court in Oyo to 42 years in prison.

He declared that God had justified him.

As head of the Presidential Special Investigative Commission for the Restoration of Public Property, Obono-Obla has handled several major corruption cases in the country.

This affected many politicians, which, according to analysts, led to accusations against him, and increased pressure for his removal from office.

He said, “May God Almighty persevere in the good work you have done as President of SPIPRPP.

“I have done my work with courage, diligence, and a heightened sense of integrity which would ordinarily earn me a commendation.

“Instead, I was framed, victimized, insulted, persecuted, and prosecuted.

“Today, Senator Albert Akban was sentenced by the Federal High Court in Oyo, Akwa Ibom State, to 42 years in prison for corruption.”

Obono-Obla explained that Albert was investigated and prosecuted by his committee for acquiring assets worth hundreds of millions of pounds in the UK and Nigeria which he failed to disclose on his asset declaration form.

According to the former aide to the president, Albert was one of the senators who used the House Kangaroo Committee to strike back at him for daring to investigate some powerful senators in 2018.

Obono-Opla revealed that another senator whose body was also investigated is in prison in the UK.

It should be noted that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had, in 2019, arraigned Albert on six counts of appropriating six cars worth N204 million when he was a state financial commissioner.

The investigation revealed that Albert had collected one of the vehicles from Jed Omokore, who was an aide to Desagne Allison Madueki, the former petroleum minister.

Omokur reportedly had dealings with the state when he offered Bassi the car.

Judge Agatha Okeke delivered his ruling on Thursday, finding the senator guilty of the crimes.

As a result, he was sentenced to Ikot Ekpen Prison to serve his prison term.

Albert is a senator representing the northeastern district of Akwa Ibom.

He had defected from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his ambition for the governorship on the platform of the Youth Progressive Party.
