Shima sues for peace, saying no elections are perfect
The former Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Sheikhu Cheema, has appealed to all Nigerian leaders, men and women of goodwill, to speak out in the collective national interest as there are no perfect elections anywhere in the world.
Cheema, who made the call in Katsina on Wednesday, urged Nigerians to set aside tribal, religious or personal interests for the sake of the nation’s unity.
According to him, no elections anywhere in the world are without complaints, and Nigeria’s elections cannot be an exception. He therefore urged Nigerians to learn how to manage our situation for the benefit of Nigeria and all Nigerians.
However, in order to build a lasting system that succeeds, Cheema said, Nigerian democracy must be grounded in the rule of law.
Our democratic institutions must be encouraged and supported in performing their role in accordance with the laws of the country.
He also called on all political, regional, religious, traditional and business leaders to join hands in supporting and deepening democracy in Nigeria for peace, unity and pacification of our nation.
In the same context, Shima appealed to all the prominent candidates in the competition to come together and speak with one voice for peace, unity and stability in this country that they seek to lead.
Cheema also mandated the Nigerian security agencies to step up their games to ensure the effective discharge of their constitutional responsibilities to protect the lives and property of Nigerians wherever they may be.
