State Governor Ekpiazu signs the Women’s Inheritance Bill into law in Abia

The governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, signed the bill into law guaranteeing a woman’s right to inherit and own property in her father’s family.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Onibuchi Imimanka, on Wednesday, the governor revealed that the development “is in line with international best practices” and also aims to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women “in Abia state.

The law, titled “Women’s Right to Inherit Property Act 2022”, was sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Abia State, Chinedu Orji, and passed by the House of Representatives on November 16, 2022.

According to the statement, Governor Ikpezu believes that continuing to treat women as second-class citizens, even in their own families, is “obsolete”.

While signing the bill, Ikpethu appreciated the Abia State Assembly for being brave enough to pass the bill, which he described as historic, positively disruptive, and capable of putting the community on a path of equal opportunity and sustainable development.

It comes two months after Rivers State Governor Nesom Wake signed into law a bill allowing women to inherit family property.
