Taraba State House of Representatives Speaker Joseph Elbasu Konene resigned on Wednesday.
The council immediately elected the member representing the Zheng constituency, John Kizito Ponzina, as the new president.
Konene was elected on the HDP platform in 2019.
His letter of resignation, which he read on the floor of the House of Representatives, surprised everyone as there was no form of skirmishes between the members of the House.
“My resignation is on personal grounds. I would like to thank the Honorable Members for their support and cooperation during my service as Speaker or this Honorable House.
Ponzina, speaking after emerging as the new Speaker, denied allegations that a palace coup was staged by members to remove the Speaker from office.
While soliciting the support of his colleagues, he promised to work around the clock to build on the previous speaker’s accomplishments.
Although no reason was given for the former speaker’s resignation, the DAILY POST gathered that his quest to stand forcefully behind parliamentary workers who had been demanding their unpaid clothing allowances for seven years necessitated his resignation as plans to impeach him were said to already be in place in Parliament.
