Several IDPs returning from Teve origins were attacked by suspected militants on Friday at the Local Government Council in Wukari, Taraba State.
The attack on Friday in the community of Tor-Eurlumon, in the Ravenkada Ward of the aforementioned Local Government Council, has once again begun to inflame tensions.
Aside from the attacks, the property of the returnees, according to the DAILY POST, was destroyed beyond recognition.
Some of the victims recounted their ordeal at the hands of their attackers, and said they were busy repairing their destroyed homes and laying bricks to rebuild when the attackers invaded the community.
According to one of the victims, who gave his name as Tarnig John, the attackers were not only armed to the teeth, but were firing sporadically.
“Some of our brothers ran into the bush for safety,” he said. Those who decided to stay behind did not escape the attackers.
“Some of us who had decided to stay until we found out the cause of the unfortunate and ugly situation were descending heavily with machetes leaving three of us in a pool of our blood.”
“When they found us unconscious, they took a Peugeot and three motorbikes and went ahead to burn all our belongings without any intervention.”
The attackers, who were saddened by the alleged frosty attitudes of local and state governments towards the displaced people from Tiv in the state, called on the federal government to rush to their rescue.
They also urged the authorities at all levels to take proactive steps to prevent the emergence of any form of crisis in the Council and the country as a whole.
When reached for comment by phone, the chairman of the House caretaker committee, Dr Daniel Addy, told DAILY POST he was just leaving Jalingo, the state capital, for Wukari.
He admitted that he had been informed of what had happened in his local government, and promised to get back to our reporter once he had made an assessment of the situation in the community.
On the other hand, the police public relations affiliated to the leadership, Othman Abdullah, said that the leadership has not yet been properly informed of the incident.
However, he promised to contact the Division Police Officer (DPO) of Wukari Division to find out what was on the ground and update the press in time.
