The Independent National Electoral Commission declares that the elections for the southern Yobe district were inconclusive
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the just-concluded South Yobe Senate elections inconclusive.
Senate Re-Election Officer Prof. Chitima Abdul Kadir Saidu, who made the announcement during the announcement of the results in Potiskum, said the decision was taken after the results were canceled in the polling unit 003 Manawaci of the local government Fika due to over voting.
Professor Saido explained that the total number of votes exceeded the number of approved voters in the affected polling unit.
He revealed that the canceled ballot unit includes 1,118 registered voters and that the total number of approved voters in the unit exceeded the total number of registered voters.
According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission will set the date for the elections between the two major political parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC) which has already secured 69,417 votes and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), which has received 68,800 votes so far.
“I want us to get it right, the difference between the first and the second is 617. However, in the election process, a total of 1,118 votes were cancelled.
“If the difference is higher than the total canceled then we will announce the winner but when the difference is higher than the difference, can we declare the winner? This is where we find ourselves now,” stated Prof. Saido.
