The UK congratulates Tinubu, and urges the FG to address the opposition’s concerns
The United Kingdom has congratulated the President-elect of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his victory in the elections that just concluded on Saturday 25 February 2023.
The UK, in a congratulatory message sent by its Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, also called on the Nigerian authorities to address opposition parties’ concerns over the organization of the elections, which were marred by technical challenges as indicated by civil society organizations and international observers.
James Cleverly said: “The UK commends Nigerian voters for their participation in the presidential and National Assembly elections and for their patience and flexibility in exercising their democratic rights. We congratulate the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
We note the opposition’s position on the election result and the concerns expressed by civil society and monitoring missions regarding the organization of the process, which includes delays and technical challenges.
“We encourage the authorities to carefully consider all concerns, and take action to resolve outstanding issues on the fulfillment of the will of Nigerians.”
