The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Union Branch, on Thursday condemned the assault last Tuesday of one of its members and a doctor by three bereaved relatives of a patient, Alhaji Saleu, who died in the hospital as a casualty. as a result of leukemia.
In a statement in Ilorin signed by its president, Kazem Afolabi Ainla, the association warned that the union would no longer tolerate such violent attacks on any of its members.
The authority said such brutal acts on any of its members and other health workers in the hospital “must stop”.
While the association’s leadership sympathizes with the relatives of the deceased, Ainla said, it was wrong for anyone to act in this way.
He urged the management of the facility to strengthen its security network to prevent this from happening in the future.
I recall that three family members of Al-Haj Saleh, a butcher who died in hospital on Tuesday, beat a doctor and attacked a nurse who was on duty in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) ward at UITH following what they described as indifferent behavior of medical staff that led to the death of their relative.
During the attack, it was gathered that heavy equipment was thrown at a nurse on duty twice, but for the sake of her vigilance, she evaded her on both occasions.
While the equipment was reportedly damaged, the nurse reportedly ran for her life.
The NANNM UITH branch leadership also extracted a written apology from the family of the deceased relative for the incident.
