Arsenal made an offer to Shakhtar Donetsk for winger Mykhailo Modric.
This was confirmed by coach Fabrizio Romano on Monday evening.
The Gunners have reportedly placed an initial bid of £35.2m, which could rise to £52.9m with add-ons.
Shakhtar have no intention of parting with the 21-year-old for that price.
But it is understood that the players had his heart set on a move to the Emirates.
Romano wrote on Twitter: “Arsenal have now made an offer for Mikhailo Modric. I understand it’s €40m plus €20m in add-ons.
Shakhtar want ‘a lot more’ than selling Modric.
Talks will be held with the player’s agent to discuss the deal.
“No personal issues: Modric wants Arsenal.”
