World Cup: Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has left his role after the exit

Roberto Martinez ended his stint as Belgium coach after the team’s early exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Martinez was appointed again in 2016 and his contract expired after the 2022 World Cup.

Belgium, who finished third in the 2018 World Cup, entered the tournament as the second-placed team in the world.

But they were eliminated after a bad group stage, where they lost to Morocco and drew with Croatia.

“It was my last match. It was emotional, as you can imagine,” Martinez said in his post-match press conference following Belgium’s exit from the World Cup following their goalless draw with Croatia on Thursday.

“The decision was taken just before the World Cup. I always work towards long-term projects and have to be prepared in advance.

“Since 2018 I’ve had many opportunities to leave to take up club level jobs. I’ve always wanted to be loyal and finish the job. I’m not quitting – it’s the end of my contract. That’s always been the plan.”
