Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has expressed his shock at Belgium coach Roberto Martinez’s decision to sit on the bench of brilliant Brighton winger Leandro Trossard at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to HITC, Leboeuf said it was impossible for Trossard, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, to be included by Martinez in the Belgium squad.
It is also believed that Martinez may be under pressure from senior officials to continue using more popular players in his starting line-up in Qatar.
Trossard has scored seven goals and recorded three assists in 14 Premier League appearances for Brighton this season.
Despite Trossard’s impressive form, Martinez allowed the winger to play 44 minutes of football over two matches in Qatar, picking off the unfit Eden Hazard in front of him.
“Trossard, I heard Chelsea want Trossard. And Trossard on the bench? In that Belgium national team? That’s impossible. Something is wrong,” said Leboeuf.
“Maybe Martinez is the only one who can tell us why he doesn’t have the courage to change. Maybe he has pressure from someone else.”
