Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney identified England’s main weakness ahead of the 2022 World Cup opener against Iran on Monday.
This year’s World Cup kicks off on Sunday, with host country Qatar facing Ecuador.
England are in Group B of the tournament along with Iran, Wales and the USA.
But Rooney, who said England have one of the best teams in the World Cup, admitted the centre-back could cost them through the tournament.
According to him, other countries have a stronger core defense than the Three Lions.
“England have one team, if not a stronger one. The full-backs, the midfielders, the attacking players – there’s strength across the board,” Rooney told The Times.
“The only area that isn’t as strong as some of the other countries is in central defence.
“Before, we’ve had the likes of Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, who were world class.
“When you look at Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka we have to choose from, he’s as good as we did.”
